Music
What am I supposed to do here?
You’re trying to order the 12 songs listed on the Sight-reading chart by carrying out the three exercises. Start with Exercise 1. It’s basically a sudoku with musical fragments. Use Mary’s music notes to learn how to read music (if you don’t know how already) and count up one of the fully completed lines.
I need more help with Exercise 1.
All the lines need to add up to 5 beats. The four options you have to fill in the four blanks are made up of ½ beat, 1 beat, 1½ beats, and 2 beats. Each column/row/quadrant/major diagonal will have one from each of those four categories. Enter the four given fragments into the chart so that everything adds up correctly.
Okay. I filled out Exercise 1 but can't relate it to the Sight-reading chart.
The four fragments you placed in the chart are only present in one song each. Figure out which song has each of the four fragments. Then, whatever number is shown in the upper right of that square (i.e. "Song 2") is where that song goes in the final order.
Exercise 2 is crazy. Help!
This is like exercise one, but you only have rhythms now, and you have keys listed. See the rhythm shown in the upper-right corner of the chart, where B flat meets A? Well it turns out that that rhythm is ONLY in the songs on the Sight-reading chart that are in the keys of B flat and A! Now take a look at the rhythm in the bottom left of the chart. If you can find what two songs that rhythm appears in, you can fill in the sharp key that goes with the first column of the chart AND the flat key that goes with the bottom row! Also the rules of Sudoku will be important here. The rows/columns/diagonals/quadrants still have to keep adding up to 5 beats (like in exercise 1), with a ½ beat, 1 beat, 1½ beat, and 2 beat fragment. If you're stuck, try focusing purely on the math. Remember, a ½ beat fragment can't share a row, column, diagonal, or quadrant with any other ½ beat fragment - and the same goes for the 1 beat, 1½ beat, and 2 beat fragments.
Exercise 2 is too hard. I want to move on to Exercise 3 but it looks like I need to know the solutions to Exercises 1 and 2 first.
That is correct. Here ya go!:
Marie de la Lune
Honeysuckle Love
The Boys of the Old Brigade
My Love Has Sailed Away
Alas, Poor Jonah
Hymn in the Key of F
The Death of Revolution
I Came Upon a Wounded Stag
Okay, I filled in Exercise 2, but I ended up with two possible solutions for each square in the grid.
The solutions to Exercise 1 eliminate half of your options for Exercise 2.
How can I solve Exercise 3? This is totally subjective.
True. Thankfully, Mary had some conversations on just these subjects with Percy Shelley (in the love letters).
Okay, I found the conversation but don’t see how it helps.
Percy and Mary agree on which two themes are the most artistically valuable, but they disagree on the order. Mary then weighs in on Bach vs. Mozart. Remember, you're looking for Mary's opinion, not Percy's.
I need a tiny bit more help than that.
The four remaining songs each relate to one of the four themes that Mary and Percy are discussing - religion, nature, love, and politics.
Okay I finished putting the songs in order. Now what?
Now you have to associate each song with one of the symbols on the ring pieces. Look to the titles.
I've read all these hints, and I'm still lost.
Then we recommend you copy the solution you'll find inside the Music envelope and move on to another assignment. Remember, no one is timing or scoring you. The goal is to have fun! If this puzzle isn't your cup of tea, move on!
Poetry
What am I supposed to do here?
You need to find some way to arrange these poems.
Yeah, I know THAT. I want you to tell me how!
Yes. Tell me!
Okay. Each poem specifically mentions a month. The one by Dante is a little tricky.
Wait...but there are only eight poems...and twelve green arcs...and last I checked: twelve mother franken months!
Not exactly. Remember, Mary was corresponding with a famous poet.
Okay, I found all the poems, but these new ones don't fit the pattern.
True. The poems that Percy wrote in his letters are a little trickier. The months are there, but they’ve been broken up.
I need more help with those other poems.
The months come at the end of lines: sept-ember, jewel-eye, fib-rue-wary, and no-(V)-em-brrr.
Okay. I've ordered all the poems. Now what?
Now you have to associate each poem with one of the symbols on the ring pieces. Read each poem carefully.
I've read all these hints, and I'm still lost.
Then we recommend you copy the solution you'll find inside the Poetry envelope (or here) and move on to another assignment. Remember, no one is timing or scoring you. The goal is to have fun! If this puzzle isn't your cup of tea, move on!
Letters and Riddles
What am I supposed to do now?
You need to put the love letters in order so you can use Mary's notations.
Sure, but how?
If you read them carefully, you should be able to work out the story of Mary and Percy's courtship. Put the letters in chronological order.
Okay. I just want to make sure I have the order correct. Could you verify it for me?
Absolutely!
“What an unexpected pleasure...”
“I was so pleased to receive...”
“I must admit your letter...”
“It took everything in my power...”
“I was out writing...”
“Thank you for our walk...”
“Mere beauty...”
“I must ask that you never again...”
“As you requested, I have not...”
“Meet me tonight...”
“What transpired between us...”
“I believe Claire must know...”
“We cannot go on like this...”
“I apologize for the tear stains...”
“The ship leaves for Dover...”
How do I use the rings? [Recommended Reading for ALL PLAYERS]
Start with Mary's letter and proceed through the 15 love letters, using the first two clues (with the image of the spinning ring; clockwise/counter clockwise doesn't matter) to orient the three rings. Remember, the Zodiac ring never moves. When you're finished with those first two clues, the symbols from clue one should be "touching" from ring to ring AND the symbols from clue two should ALSO be touching (again, remember the Zodiac ring never moves, so you should only have been spinning the outer two rings).
At that point, you'll use the NEXT two clues (with the image of the ribbon) to tie a ribbon between the two segments in the Zodiac ring that correspond to the two images in question (i.e. the images won't usually be ON the Zodiac ring, so you're connecting the segment that is part of the same vertical "slice" with the symbol in question).
You'll then repeat this same process three more times. In other words, your clues will always go "orient a ring," "orient a ring," "tie a ribbon" "tie a ribbon." You should end up with four tied ribbons.

Look inside the quadrilateral formed by the ribbons. Therein is your code.
